Introducing Nature's Guardian Angels
Halo Dish Covers was started by the team behind Spaza Store in Cape Town, who are know for making handy dish covers for covering and protecting food. Acting as Natures Guardian Angel, Halo Dish Covers offer hope to South Africans through the creation of much needed employment opportunities, and by saving our environment from single use plastic waste.
A time to grow.
Spaza’s focus is on developing and retailing functional products that could be made by women working from home. When it came time for Spaza to grow we knew that growth could not be for growth’s sake. Growth was to grow opportunities for young people in South Africa. Growth is to be used to grow our communities of like-minded people and to work together towards better business practices. And growth needs to mean less waste, and directly, less single use plastics.
So why Halo Dish Covers?
Firstly, dish covers are super handy! They are flexible, accommodating many different sizes, shapes and situations. They are durable and will stick by you for years to come. They protect you from the harmful toxins that go into your food when you use cling wrap. They protect your food from being contaminated. They protect the environment from the waste created by single use plastics. They slot into your lifestyle going into the washing machine and at hand in a drawer when you need them. They are there when you gather with friends and family. They are well appreciated as gifts, being both beautiful and useful. Each Halo Dish Cover carries an artist’s story told far and wide.
Made in South Africa.
South Africa has an alarming rate of 29,1% unemployment. In addition, the unemployment rate of the youth under the age of 25 is 58.2%! Halo Dish Covers are currently working with and uplifting existing manufactures and cooperatives who have facilities and seamstresses but do not have sufficient work to support their staff and members. The Halo team is works closely with our manufacturing partners, advisors and training institutions providing training and equipment to produce consistent excellent quality in a sustainable and efficient way. As Halo grows, we are focused on expanding this initiative to create many happy working opportunities for more young South African workers.
Opportunities for artists.
Twice a year Halo’s brand team brainstorm design themes for prints on our dish covers. Inspiration is taking from festive occasions, kitchen and dining trends, and our own imaginations. We then make public a ‘call out’ via colleges and universities, social media and our database of up and coming designers inviting young designer to submit a one-page pitch on their chosen theme. Our young professionals gain experience on pitching for work, making a presentation, and meeting a deadline. If their concept is chosen, they build out the concept to fit the many different sizes and shapes of dish covers in the Halo range. Support is offered throughout the processes and their picture is taken for the launch of their collection. The remuneration they receive allows them to make large advances in their careers by buying equipment, producing a body of work for an exhibition or paying school fees. Besides work experience and money, the artists are also given the opportunity to be famous, to tell their story, to share their work, and see how their art can be used to make the world a better place.
